It' s good but it could be better.
We arrived here late Sunday evening and we all had a strange feeling about the place as it looked deserted. We were assured by the friendly staff that the place was booked out and when the bus of French tourists arived, we had our answer. The setting is rural and you will need a car with GPS to utiliise this hotel. It's along the lines of converted old stables and its clear a lot of money was spent here but dare I say, a little while ago. Mosquitoes are a problem if you want to sit outside. The rooms were large and more than adequate, if a little in need of minor works. We ate at the accompaying restaurant twice as it would be a significant drive to find an alternative. The food was a little hit and miss, some very good and some not so. The wine list was good and reasonably priced with mostly local wines which is a plus for me. Service was good but slightly disconnected [we struggled to find someone to show us to a table] with what appeared to me, over-worked staff. In my country, a hotel would not be allowed to have the same staff member take your payment at 11:00 PM before presumably cleaning up then fronting up to breakfast service at 8:00 AM the following morning including al the pre set up. The breakfast was reasonable. There is a nice pool area, even if its too shallow to swim in half of it. In our view, a place with a little work and more care of staff could be wonderful.
Was good, now in disrepair
This hotel needs maintenance of its staff and premises to bring it back to the standard that it used to be. We arrived at 3.45 p.m.: we had booked in January and last month informed the hotel of our arrival time. The grumpy female receptionist told us our room wasn’t ready. Poor first impression. The fly screen to the reception room was torn in many places. Bad second impresssion. The male receptionist said we could sit outside our room while it was being cleaned. He sent us some drinks. Our room was ready at 4.30, 45 minutes after our arrival. Poor third impression. We were expecting a masseria similar in size to previous ones, typically 4 or 5 bedrooms. (Our fault for not researching enough.) This place is HUGE, I don’t know how many rooms, but our room number was 153. Consequently it is a long walk to reception, parking, rooms, pool, restaurant etc. Our room was big, with a big bathroom. BUT: no kettle/coffee machine/cups/shampoo; the smallest soap ever seen; the shower head is held on by tape; there is a clear glass window between the bedroom and the bathroom (why not make it a one-way mirror, or use frosted glass, or a blind?), there are cracks in the walls. Good point: quietest air con in Italy. Second good point: comfortable bed. Second pillows arrived for second night without having to ask. Sixth bad point: loose toilet seat - again sign of lack of maintenance. The grounds are in a poor state. The “lawns” are more weeds than grass, and need cutting. The ponds are green stagnant water. There are many light fittings on the pathways that are broken or missing - some with weeds growing through them. There are weeds poking through cracks in the paving stones. the paving stones are cracked in many places which is a tripping hazard.. The retaining walls on the pathways are falling to pieces. The swimming pool has peeling paint, very cold, not obviously heated at all, even by sunlight. Maintenance required throughout the outside areas. Our dinner on our first night coincided with two big tour groups which swamped the staff. The groups got the staff’s attention and we were left wanting and waiting. We were offered a fixed menu of two primi patti and two secondi patti: no a la carte, no antipasto or pasta, no price list. It was almost “a take-it-or-leave-it, we’re busy” impression. Dinner, when it arrived, was uninspiring. The next day the female receptionist was still arguing with staff and guests, and could not clearly explain where breakfast was served, even in Italian. Good point: male evening receptionist (Giovanni) very helpful, and good English. Dinner on second night: better. There was only one (small) tour group, so staff were more attentive. The price for the two nights (excluding dinner) was 153euros, including Booking.com’s commission. I guess you get what you pay for.
Lovely place with friendly staff but the rooms need an update. Food was delicious. The chef prepares fresh menus daily with a large variety of local ingredients and typical dishes. Perfect location for exploring Alberobello, Ostuni, Licorotondo, Matera etc
Great hotel, hidden gem, great central location for sight seeing. All the staff are very helpful, excellent service, great food in the restaurant. Outside pool is fantastic for the kids. Managers give great advice on where to go and where to park in town. Would definitely come back again. If hiring a car from Bari Airport prepare for a long wait, we waited 2 hrs, make sure you get a ticket from the desk for your turn.
One of the most relaxing holidays
We came here for 5 days. Two adults and a teenager. The hotel was fully booked so we had three of us in our room however the rooms are spacious and and there is plenty of wardrobe space and our plentiful towels were changed daily. Also the air conditioning in the room isn’t noisy and is extremely effective bearing in mind the temperature was over 30 while we were there. I’ve read other reviews of the shared terrace and that is true however everyone else is there to have a quiet time so we didn’t find this a problem at all. Breakfast is plentiful and yes as others have mentioned a lot of it is out of machines however this is balanced by a huge honeycomb, loads of fresh cakes and pastries and as much bread, ham and cheese as you want. Coffee if you have a specific request can also be made by the very friendly staff who are always on hand. Dinner at the hotel was lovely with a great choice and a good wine menu. There is also the option to eat on the terrace or inside. The pool is probably one of the most practical I have seen in a hotel for families. It has a small jacuzzi, a gently shelving shallow end and a substantial deep end for more serious swimmers. One of the staff acts as a life guard too. There are also plenty of sun beds. The pool side bar is friendly and the food served there is not just sandwiches but a varied menu or pasta, fish and salads. Finally the staff are probably the key highlight at this family run hotel. They are friendly and constantly helpful and always there if you need them even when they have a big wedding on- there were two weddings when we were there. In summary we will be back!
