Only use if wanting a handy hotel for the airport
My opinion is that this hotel should only be considered if you want a location near the airport for a one night stay. This hotel was booked on a recommendation from our travel agent - my wife wanted to see Pompeii, and our agent thought this the best location for us. The hotel is approx 8 km from anything of interest in Naples. The location is poor, and there is very little in the vicinity that I can commend. The street is very busy, all the time, and there is little choice of anywhere decent to eat. The staff could barely speak English, and didn't really seem to care much about their guests. This was especially so at breakfast. Other reviewers of this hotel are right - breakfast is held in a bedroom off the ground floor, and policed by staff who obviously did not understand any English. Their presence really appeared to be to intimidate guests and to make sure that nobody snaffled an extra bread roll. The choice of food for breakfast was very limited, and what there was was very bland (quite possibly the blandest cornflakes I have ever had!). Our 19-year old son felt so unsafe in this location that on the first night he tried to book an immediate return flight home. This was sufficient motive, if the rest wasn't bad enough, for me to arrange a hotel in Sorrento for the remaining 6 days of our 7 day trip, and arrange a private transfer there. In all that set us back another £1,100 or so. We are still awaiting the result of my complaint letters (note - letters plural) to our travel agent for their feedback. FYI - Pompeii sits virtually equidistant from Naples and Sorrento. The remainder of our holiday was very enjoyable. Sorrento is a lovely place to visit, with lots to see and do. Quite the opposite of Naples which is basically a business city, with little to occupy a tourist's time. Lastly, this hotel was supposedly 4 star. In my opinion it is not even as good as a bog-standard 2 star. I recommend that before contemplating booking this hotel you form your own opinion on the basis of the other reviews. I accept some of the blame for accepting this hotel as part of our holiday as I was daft enough not to read any reviews until a few days before departure. That's a mistake that I won't make again. Upon reading the reviews I approached the travel agent to see about relocating us to another hotel. However that was going to cost us the price of another hotel with no likelihood of getting our money back for the Barbato. We decided to "suck it and see", but given what I have detailed we should have gone ahead with that as we ended up having to pay for another hotel anyway. Oh, and by the way, the taxis from the airport DO rip you off. The supposed 15 Euro cost was offered to us at 35 Euros before reluctantly accepting another at 25 Euros. None of the taxi drivers accepted that we knew that it was meant to cost only 15 Euros.
Basic for a one night stay before the airport. DO NOT EXPECT ANYTHING ELSE AND YOU'LL BE FINE.
From the airport this hotel is about 15-20 minutes taxi journey in traffic. The taxi should only cost around €15. Any more and you are being ripped off. Ask the taxi driver to put the meter on!!! The hotel is on a road that looks as though it belongs in Beirut. Do not expect great things. The staff were welcoming and helpful, if a little blunt. We initially had workmen below us banging around, fixing up a shop. This was annoying and noisy so we complained. The helpful receptionist asked the workmen for us, in Italian, how long they were going to be. They said 10 minutes and sure enough, 10 minutes later they stopped. Helpful and polite of the staff. The room felt like I was in the 1940's and decor was horrendous. It was however clean and tidy. The room did not have a safe. The hotel is on a busy main road and you will need ear plugs for a good night sleep. The breakfast was in a small room and was manned by two, very well built, women who didn't acknowledge us when we walked in and spent the whole time picking their noses and playing on their phones. I get the impression they were only there to stop people taking bread roles for lunch etc. No smiles from these two delights. The Wifi was pretty bad. The connection was poor and kept dropping out. Considering the router was clearly visible just outside our room, this was bad. The TV was good enough. A small flat screen mounted to the wall. It didn't have any English channels though. The bed was comfortable. There is no parking. Basic for a one night stay before the airport. DO NOT EXPECT ANYTHING ELSE AND YOU'LL BE FINE.
Good for 1 night
Stayed here for 1 night before our flight out of Naples. It's a great location near to the airport, roughly about 10 mins in a taxi. Checked in ok, reception guy was friendly enough & explained where our room was & breakfast times etc... Our room was on the first floor, very clean & tidy, only problem was this hotel is on a busy main road & quite noisy. As we arrived late & were checking out early, we just needed a few hours sleep, so at least the bed was comfy enough. Next morning we went upstairs to the 3rd floor for breakfast, very strange, as it seemed to be in a room that didn't look like a breakfast room!! There were about 4-5 tables & the area was quite small. There was 2 other people having breakfast & us, along with a lady who serves you tea/coffee, not English speaking, she seemed to talk to these other people, which made us feel very uncomfortable, as though we shouldn't be there, so we just had a coffee & a few bits that were there, not much choice & so little of everything, nothing to call it a breakfast, we just wanted to get out of there & get to the airport! The guy at reception called us a taxi to the airport which is 15 euros, just be careful as we got charged 20 on pick up of the airport. I'm sure there are nicer hotels around this area, but for 1 night & convenience to the airport it's not that bad, obviously you get what you pay for! As for "breakfast" this certainly could do with a huge improvement!!
Do not expect too much
This hotel was booked for us to stay for 7 nights during our trip to Naples. After reading some reviews we decided that the price was ok for its location and star rating. We arrived in a taxi from the airport which charged us 30 euros, we later found out that this was a massive rip off and that it should have been closer to 10 or 15. The hotel is situated in the middle of a very busy street in a suburb of Naples, an incredibly loud and bustling street with much traffic outside. The reception staff were helpful even with their limited English (some were better than others) and gave us a room facing the aforementioned busy street. The room was quite small, but clean and tidy. The beds were a mystery to us, we booked a double room but we had two single mattresses that had been pushed together for some reason, we didn't let it bother us despite having to push them back together a few times! There was a mini fridge but no tea/coffee facilities or kettle. You cannot call reception from your room and there is no room service. What I did find odd was the lack of a communal area/reception. There is one very unloved armchair where the reception desk sits but it's dark and dingy and I don't know who would want to rest there. Forget about the WIFI, it's unreachable from any of the rooms. The shower tray kept filling with water very quickly, I don't know what the issue was here, but being British and obviously having an aversion to complaining directly we just turned the shower down so that it filled less quickly. We also ran out of toilet paper rapidly, I think the rolls are shorter than what we're used to so we kept having to ask reception for more, which sometimes they forgot about entirely and other times it took them 30 minutes to bring. We appeared to be the only guests in the hotel some days, and others were only staying for a night. Maybe this is what this hotel is best used for, not a 7 day holiday. Breakfast was included but we only managed to reach it on two days due to our schedule. It was basic, a few cereals and pastries, not bad but it is just set up in what appears to be an unused guest room on the third floor. The main problem with the hotel was the location, as this was our first trip to Naples we didn't realise that it was so far away from the city. You should expect to pay 15 to 20 euros in a taxi to the city each way. You can get the bus but we didn't understand the process of where you get your tickets, the routes or timetable so we left it. Overall I didn't dislike the hotel, I would have simply preferred something a bit nicer for our holiday and the location was something I would research better next time.
You get what you pay for
We stayed for night as part of our roadtrip in Italy. The hotel is located on a very busy street and traffic in Napoli is terrorizing. They parked our car in a small courtyard and helped getting us out aswell. The receptionists are very friendly and thats about it of friendly staff... The room we had was quite big and the bed was good enough to have a sleep. We didnt had alot of influence of all the traffic outside during the night. Breakfast is the worst one that I ever had in a hotel. It is served in a sleeping room, converted to a breakfast room. There were only a bit of sweets and pastries that tasted like nothing. And the breakfast lady wasnt standing in line when they gave out friendliness. Overall we had a good nights rest and the hotel is decent for what you pay. We are never returning as Napoli is such a garbage dump. The neighbourhood is looking like a back alley in a third world country capital. As beautiful Italy is, as shamefull is Napoli.
