I originally reserved this hotel through Expedia and waited to pay until I arrived. I had no idea that the hotel did not accept American Express, and apparently neither did they! They ran my card until I received a notification that my card was locked. I unlocked my card and they continued trying until I was sent to my room. I was escorted to the room I wanted and had a great view with a private balcony, which was nice. The door was only a sliding glass door which came away from the wall when opened. I went in and found that there was no air conditioning as advertised and looked around. The man who sent me there disappeared. He returned and handed me towels and walked away. I was told at the front desk that they would expect payment the next day but never explained why my card wasn't accepted. I became very uncomfortable as I sat there and thought about how I was coldly treated. I decided to leave and find a place closer to the city center where a warmer staff greeted me at the Hotel Kaqchiquel. I tried to cancel my stay there at the Perla Maya, but the Wifi went in and out in my room. I planned on canceling at the next hotel. I dropped my key off at the front desk and explained to the woman that I was uncomfortable there and how I thought the staff was rude and never explained why I couldn't pay with my Amex. She refused to let me leave. She had to call her boss. I stood there and heard her call me a "Stupido Gringo" to the person at the other end of the phone. I tried to leave and she chased me saying I had to pay. I told her I would cancel when I had wifi and she would get the cancellation fee then. She continued to yell in the phone and then said, "get out stupid gringo!" I ran out. I have never felt so terrible in a hotel or anywhere for that matter as I did there. Beware the staff and the rudeness! This location is not close to the city center, the staff are all rude and the amenities are not what are advertised!
Quiet with great views

This is a great value hotel. The location set a block back from the lake in a very quiet street. At night you can get a tuk tuk for Q5 to the main street. I didn't want to walk around by myself. The pool is very clean. I dipped my feet on but didn't swim as a massive thunderstorm. There is a terrace on the roof with gorgeous views. I stayed on the 4th floor. The room was clean and spacious with a lovely view. A nice big shower with hot water. There is soap but no shampoo. I wouldn't expect shampoo in anything but 4* and above in Guat. The staff are welcoming and friendly. The lady at reception speaks good English and I was able to communicate with everyone else with my very few isolated Spanish words. I had a great night sleep and loved waking up to the views over the lake.
Please watch out

Please watch out here. They cheat at reception. At check in they tried to charge me more above final price. Hopefully I had all noted from reservation site how the bill should look like with taxes, VAT etc. It was about 10 minutes discussion and receptionist gave back me money when I very loudly asked for a bill. That was evidentially planned action and this guy makes this regularly on purpose. Shame on you. I travel a lot and it is not nice feeling when it meets you situation like that and I felt very bad in this hotel meeting this person every day. That also disqualify final opinion about hotel. Some other facts. Breakfast you can choose between American and Guatemalan. Both tasty. Room was generally OK but small. No wardrobe, nothing to put your clothes. Terrace on roof nice. Swimming pool dirty and no sunbeds. Nobody speaking English in whole hotel. Some basic words. No sanitaries in room, only soap. No changing towels. No towels for swimming pool when I decided just lay on grass because of no sunbeds. Very badly mantained area of hotel. Please think twice when you would like consider booking a stay here.

This hotel is located about 2 minutes from the lake and the best thing is also the prices charged. Very affordable, great breakfast, the staffs were nice and the owner was exceptionally helpful. The hotel is a few minutes walk from the main street but you don't have to deal with the noise. Definitely recommend!
