Arrived at the Portage after a hard day walking 24km of the QCT. Had amazing stays at Furneaux and Punga and was expecting a similar experience. Booked in for 2 nights as a rest day was scheduled at the Portage before doing the final 20km leg to Anakiwa. Booked through a tour company so assumed they would have done their due diligence. As others have said - reception desk is disorganised, dinner is expensive and not enough options, the snapper bar serves chips and pizzas made by scruffy staff who look barely old enough to be cooking, the breakfast finishes at 9am and arriving at 8.45 (on our rest day so we deserved a sleep in!) we were told breakfast was finished but we could take some as long as we ate outside. The hot breakfast items were all stone cold so I assume the heat had been turned off well before then, the grounds need tidying, decks have nails sticking up, rooms aren’t clean, there is no milk for you to make your own tea or coffee, most of the staff have difficulty understanding English and are not very polite, etc etc. Get it together please THC! This is such a lovely part of NZ, I know the last few years of COVID and weather events have been hard on businesses but you have travellers coming now who want to have a good experience and tell others to come here. If the majority of your guests are QCT walkers - appreciate them, cater to them, and look after them! It feels clear there is a lack of teamwork and pride on their work across the staff- figure this out please! Hope to come back sometime and see a successful thriving business - Furneaux and punga cove have done it - ask for their advice!
Poor performance - taking advantage of walkers on the queen charlotte track

So we visited 10 years ago and now again - this time because we were doing the queen charlotte track. I’d be trying very hard to avoid staying here again. The room - wasn’t serviced properly before our visit and we had no soap and no milk for tea and coffee and dirty cups from the last occupant - the bathroom waste pipe leaked - some of the lights didn’t work - isn’t serviced during your stay. The dinner - is buffet - which to their credit ( given staff shortages) is the right thing to do but for those staying two nights some rotation would be good! - the sitting time is reported to be 1/2 hr which is way too short - the booking system is a bit hit and miss The place - needs some much needed capital for its investment. - The pool was green ( and therefore unused). - Steps are broken and therefor a safety hazard. - the main bar deck is off limits ( assuming for safety reasons too) And there is only one working washing machine. In fairness staff are doing their best with the card deck they have been dealt with but THC needs to really step up here. The potential is wasted.

I was expecting great things from the advertising but it seems things are not that good at The Portage right now. Hopefully it’s just because of covid or the recent road closures but it seems the place is pretty tired & in need of a good clean & spruce up. My room smelt badly of mould (from the window sills), the carpet was stained & thin, & the toilet hadn’t had a decent clean. The pool was green!! The young staff were doing their best and were always polite. Great that you could get a ride from/to the ferry or walking track. Hope things improve as it could be a lovely hotel.
Such a nice place with so much potential to make guests fall in love

Of the three hotel we stayed along the Queen Charlotte Track this was the most disappointing. I find by the way you are welcomed says a lot about the hotel. The person at reception was polite and friendly, but vague in the process and where we need to go to our room. Our room was okay, but these are two story terraces suits and we were below a family so most of the evening was listening to pounding footsteps by the kids. So ask for a top level room. The room king size bed is just two single beds with a king sheet overtop and therefore not the best mattress to sleep on after 24km walk. As our bags are transferred from hotel to hotel along our walk. At the first two hotels they were in our rooms when we arrived. At the Portage Hotel the receptionist said they had arrive. But wasn’t sure where they were at the time, but she would get them delivered asap. We when to our room and after an hour waiting I went to reception to find out when we would be getting our bags. Walking over to reception centre I saw our bags we’re sitting in the luggage rack where anybody could take them. So I grabbed them. During our stay no staff followed up with us to find out if we had our luggage. The restaurant has two options 1. a la carts with no price on the menu (did find out it was $68 for 3 course) or buffet (this is the default booking in restaurant (again with no prices on the menu, but was told $48). We had the buffet and it was okay, nothing special. In the morning asked for extra coffee satchels and milk for the room and was directed to the bar. Where they said they didn’t have any, but could make us a coffee and deliver to my room. We accepted and waited for 20 minutes. Then went back to the bar. Where the coffees were made sitting on the counter. But the other person behind the counter didn’t know they were to be delivered to our room. Disappointing. The amenities around the place needed attention. Wanted use the pool but it was green. The bar balcony to sit outside was closed for safety reasons. As we were part of the Queen Charlotte Track premium package we were booked into Furneaux Lodge, Punta Cove Resort and Portage Hotel. I don’t think there are many hotel choices along the way. But that said, there are opportunities for management and staff to get the small things right. The positive. Such a nice place with so much potential to make guests fall in love with the bay and hotel.
Much better than expected!

Having read some reviews we were a little worried. However we found the room excellent, TUI terrace huge bed, very comfortable spacious room and balcony. Great shower after the wet walk in! The staff on reception were SO helpful and welcoming. I saw them helping everyone with various requests, phoning water taxis ect. The buffet we were worried about was actually great, we ate early at 6pm. There was about 12 different salads, all fresh and tasty. Desserts were amazing too. The gluten free carrot cake muffin was insanely good. The hot section was abit of a let down but overall we ate well. We would stay again.
