Enjoyable stay and helpful staff

Stayed at this hotel 24th to 26th September on a Caledonian Travel trip. I just want to say a big thank you to Kate in Housekeeping for finding and returning a necklace which I left in my room. I also want to mention Holly in the bar area who was very friendly and helpful.
Awful hotel -the bad reviews are true!

I honestly thought that the hotel couldn't be as bad as some of the negative reviews I had read . . . well it was!
The hotel is extremely run down, dated and in certain areas in a state of disrepair. Several of the staff were rude - e.g. when I arrived for breakfast the attendant just said "room number?" without looking up to acknowledge me, never mind greet me . . . to which I made a point of saying "and a good morning to you too" - she got the message.
If you are expecting to enjoy use of the spa or gym during your stay, then arrive early. They close at 7pm and last entry is 6pm (I was rudely refused entry when I arrived at 6.10pm until I argued that check-in had taken almost 20 mins, thereby delaying me). They don't open until 9am and checkout is at 10am so hardly enough time to use it. The pool was a good size and seemed clean but also this area of the hotel is tired and the lockers were rusty, showers dirty etc.
The room itself looked like it hadn't seen a lick of paint or any kind of modernisation since the 1980s. The ensuite didn't even have a shower, just a bath tub (without a shower over it). I have joined idea how I could have washed my hair if I hadn't done it in the spa shower. Even the toilet roll holder was "deceased". The fire alarm went off shortly after 7am but that didn't wake me - what woke me was the clattering collection of several cages (presumably laundry) which were pushed 50 yards to an awaiting truck before 7am on a Sunday morning!!! Surely they could arrange a more suitable time for such a noisy job.
Breakfast was rather basic - no tea or coffee brought to the table and no modern self-service coffee machine. Instead a big canister of hot water and the same sachets of instant coffee that are in the rooms. I had to ask for the freshly set table to be cleaned as it was dirty and had lots of crumbs, to which I was told to sit somewhere else 🙈
The lift was broken and would only go to the 1st floor (if you wanted the 2nd floor you had to use one in a different area of the hotel). I got the impression it had been that way for a while.
The only positives I can state are that the bed was comfortable and the sheets clean but everything else was disappointing. I would not stay here again.
So Much Potential

What a grand place. Just lacks so much in the running and day to day tasks.
Its a little dated, but dont let that blind you. This place has a lot going for it. Spa and gym, bars and restaurant's (although nobody told us the opening times).
Working nights, we placed the do not disturb signs on the doors. However were still awoken before the check out times on both nights, regardless of the 1st or 2nd night (Getting in at 3am and being woken by 9am is tough).
What a shame

To be fair I paid £48 for the night for a single room so I'm not surprised that I didn't get a lot, but the standard of cleanliness and hygiene seems to fall short. Providing COVID bags of sanitised condiments shouldn't be an alternative to cleaning.
The hotel main house was once grand and has splendid reminders of a time gone by. It is now tired, old, creaky and past its best. The reception area was busy with contractors whose booking had not gone through so a 15 minute wait when you have travelled 2 hours not the best start, but the receptionist did apologise for the wait. My room comprised a small entrance lobby, small bathroom with shower and a single bed. The room measured 2m x 2m. The tall leaded single pane window had no curtain and being about 6ft high was covered in cobwebs. The TV had no remote, so changing through 34 channels took a long time. There was no bedside table, just a stool for the kettle. The main light didn't work, but the bed was clean, albeit with no headboard.
The bathroom at least had a blind to the window, but was filthy. The window was cracked and draughty. The shower had no curtain and was very small. You flood the bathroom when you shower. The floor tiles were cracked and dirty.
I didn't eat or drink in the bar, but the breakfast choice was okay. Sachet coffee in a world of Costa and Starbucks is just not acceptable. I booked this hotel last minute and as I said £48 for a room is cheap. It was quiet once the bar closed and I had a good night's sleep. My issue having come home tonight and looked at the photos on their website is one of representation. It's nothing like the photos.
Book fearing the worst and you might just find it bearable.
Don’t do it

Oh my goodness… what can I say. It’s cheap … why? … well … my executive double … in COVID … was dated, that’s not great but acceptable but what is not acceptable is the sticky uncleared surface where teas and coffees were made … Breakfast … mostly edible … coffee!!! Hot water supplied with a sachet instant coffee … really!???
Furniture broken, coffee tables in bar not properly cleaned, dead wasps in Bain Marie surface at breakfast bar, fire alarm at 7 am. … where was Basil and Manual?
