Beware the night club

Reviewed 29 november, 2022

Modern city centre hotel near the rocks and useful, for nightlife and restaurants room and bed clean much as would be expected of a city hotel anywhere in the world but beware it is located across the road from a night club which has late music licence Friday and Saturday we were there for both and the music was loud until 1 am and people leaving and noisy until 4.30 am on Saturday noise of the air con shut some out but seriously affected us on the front of the building not a pleasant experience We were offered another room but at 4.30 in the morning it was too late so advice avoid the front bedrooms on those days or take some ear plugs

Exceptional location and value, zero charm.

The Rydges Sydney Harbour is all about location location location. This is a basic but very clean and well appointed hotel in the historic Rocks area of Sydney. There are restaurants, shops and historic sites all around the hotel. It is very convenient to the Circular Quay train station with direct trains from the airport. It is very clean and the staff very helpful. They also have free luggage storage. There is nothing special about the hotel itself, however it’s location is exceptional and the rooftop pool and Jacuzzi are very nice. There are views of the Sydney Opera House when there is not a giant cruise ship moored between the hotel and the opera house which is basically always. Overall, this is good value for your money if your not desiring charm.

On the decline

Reviewed 25 november, 2022

First stayed here three years ago and returned prior to a cruise. The hotel is in a fantastic position being extremely close to the cruise terminal and the Rocks and Quay area. The staff that we had dealings with were great, the bed was comfortable, breakfast good, and the small bar was a pleasant place to unwind. We had an early flight and really appreciated that our room was available on arrival. However the room was dated and the furniture had many chips out of it. The general room area was clean however the bathroom cleaning was disgraceful, with mould in a few places, particularly the grab rail above the bath. The black mould on the lower wall fixing had been there for some time and it would have been impossible for a cleaner not to have noticed it. My wife used the iron and put water in it which ran everywhere. No real problem and she ironed without steam. Of more concern was the hair dryer which sparked and emitted smoke. This was dangerous and obviously she immediately stopped use, and I wonder how we didn't set off the room smoke alarms. This was reported to the front desk and they replaced the dryer immediately. Finally, I think a hotel of this standard (cost) should provide a couple of bottles of water in the room. It was the first hotel we have stayed in for a while that didn't provide water. I would hope this hotel is given a little TLC before we consider staying here again.

Good, but could be better.

I had stayed here several times prior to this visit and was very happy then. But this time – not so much. I couldn’t put my finger on it . . . but I just think it’s relying on it’s fantastic location overlooking Sydney harbour, to make up for the short comings of a hotel in this chain. The air conditioning is noisy and did not really cool the room; the extraction fan in the bathroom did not work; in a room we had booked and paid for three people there were only two chairs; and bar staff had to cover the bar and the restaurant. Being picky I know, as there is so much to like about this place – cleaning staff are meticulous, the lobby is a great place to sit and watch the world go by, the restaurant is excellent for a long lunch, and we love the roof top pool and spa – what a view.

Great location in the Rocks.

Beautiful heritage listed hotel. Very convenient location in the Rocks. The hotel is dated but very clean. Our harbour view room was tired, but clean. The bathroom is small but okay for one night. The bed was very comfortable. There are stairs to negotiate to gain access to your rooms.
